The Lutheran Church in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan is helping Afghan refugees find permanent housing. The organization is pledging to help 100 Afghans find permanent housing in the Southern Wisconsin region. Along with providing housing, the organization is also helping these refugees find employment, schools, and other necessities. Program manager Mary Flynn says that depending on the number of sponsors, the organization could help as many as 200 Afghans. Lutheran Social Services (LSS) has helped more than 550 people settle in the Washington, D.C. metro area in its first two months of operation. They have a goal of determining 800 individuals in two months. To help with the resettlement process, LSS has enlisted the community’s help. For example, Uber and Lyft donate free transportation for daily tasks, and Airbnb has donated $70,000 to rent out temporary rooms. The organization is constantly evaluating its operations, and it expects to continue helping Afghan refugees.
